Another Hot Summer Day

Despite temperatures in the mid 90’s we successful danced our way through the streets of Minocqua yesterday. Before the parade began we misted our dancers with water to cool them down. A small number of girls just weren’t able to take the heat so we played it safe and had them watch from the sidelines. It was the hottest 4th of July I can ever recall.

After the parade we had the camp vans blowing air conditioning as we took turns with campers getting in and out of the vans to cool off. Everyone was dripping in their own sweat. They loved the day but it was unbearably hot. The only girls who weren’t bothered by the high temperatures were my girls from Mexico. The rest of us were melting. We enjoyed a cookout together and then walked 4 blocks towards Lake Minocqua to watch the Min-aqua-bat Ski Show. Within 20 minutes, after arriving at the ski show, the wind picked up and the temperature dropped 18 degrees. Campers were seen running to the concession stands for sweatpants and sweatshirts. It was an odd day weather wise. The fireworks were the best I’ve seen in years and the finale was the finest I’ve ever witnessed up north.

Today everyone is dragging a bit. We had waffle sticks for breakfast followed by inspection and a morning of full activities. At lunch I was unable to give announcements due to a lodge full of campers and staff chanting, “We’re so hot. We don’t know what to do. Somebody told us that you were hot too so…..maybe we could have a waterfront day.”  They were relentless and loud. I decided to compromise and we had a rest period waterfront with tubing, swimming, blobbing and sliding. Then we moved into our last three periods of activities. No rest for the weary. Tomorrow afternoon we will sign up for new activities.

Tonight Happy Camper Hall will be transformed into Club Agawak and we will dance the night away while we munch on snacks prepared by our kitchen.  The theme is “C is for CAMP”. They can dress up as anything that begins with the letter C. Watch for pictures on the web. I’m sure they’ll be very creative with their outfits.

Right now outside my office window the lake is alive with sailboats, skiers, and swimmers. It’s a great day to be an Agawak Girl.

Until next time,
Mary
