Full Speed Ahead Monday

Today the CIT’s just returned from a great trip in the Boundary Water Canoe Area that was four days and three nights long.  They had awesome weather for the whole trip and enjoyed the food most of all: the pita and humus along with the Oreo cheesecake.  During the trip one group had the opportunity to see a moose, which was a once in a lifetime opportunity to see such a beautiful creature in the wild.

In the next week we have a trip going to the Porcupine Mountains and as of now we have eight girls signed up from three different cabins (7,9, and 10) with 12 spots open for more campers to sign up.  The girls will be hiking around the Lake of the Clouds, which has amazing views of the Porcupine Mountains.  The girls will also have the opportunity to go swimming in Lake Superior before they return to camp.

Our last trip of the year is an overnight trip to Black River Harbor.  On this trip the girls will have the opportunity to view five different waterfalls along a short and easy 1.5-mile walk.  After the walk the girls will have the chance to go down to the beach and relax on the shore of Lake Superior and will be able to go swimming in one of the world’s largest fresh water lakes.  As of now all the girls from cabin D are going to Black River Harbor, which leaves seven spots open for campers to sign up.

Yesterday was another awesome day to be at Agawak. We enjoyed a relaxing lazy breakfast with morning clinics. Later, our camp friends over at Kawaga came over for an afternoon waterfront carnival. We had a slip-n-slide going outside alumni hall and our popcorn machines were working in high gear.  Games were organized on the lower athletic field and all the toys on the waterfront were open for fun in the sun.  As the boys from Kawaga boarded the buses we heard them exclaim “I wish I was a girl camper at Agawak.”   We clearly showed those boys how much fun it is to be an Agawak Girl!

Today we had a full day of activities. It was another hot, muggy day perfect for water activities. Our pace has been fast and furious with no end in sight. We are gearing up for our fastest pace yet this summer as we head into the final two weeks of camp.  There is so much to do yet so little time in which to get it all done.

Today after lunch two of my older campers, Meredith Leon and Sydney Salit, taught our new campers old Agawak songs.  I was impressed with their initiative and willingness to give up their rest period to help our younger campers.  They are both great counselor material.

I had to chuckle today when cabin H took it upon them to remove the side screen window of the arts and crafts building so they could make a birthday sign for fellow camper Lauren Mass. It was locked as it usually is during rest period. When asked why they removed the screen and crawled inside they replied, “We knocked and then the screen window fell off.” What is the likelihood of that? They will be conducting a paper pick up together before campfire tonight.

In a few short minutes I will be announcing our weekly campfire girls.  The following staff and campers will address the entire camp at campfire tonight: Samantha Himel, Jami Bloch, Emma Alter, Nicole Rosenwasser, and Bronwyn James. I wish parents back home could hear the wonderful words expressed by all our campfire girls as they read their speeches while the whole camp listens attentively.

We are having a blast here.  I’ll keep you posted as much as I can. On most days it’s hard to find even twenty minutes :)

Smile on,
