The fun continues...

At Agawak we pack in a serious amount a fun into each day regardless of the weather. The sun greeted us this morning as we gathered around flagpole to sing our hip-hip hoorays to Talia Zazove and Sam Munze. Ducky and Abraham served up scrambled eggs, fresh Forever Bagels and bacon.

Today campers had their first Blue and White lip-sync practice of the session and we unveiled their Olympic Day teams for 2016! We are going with a movie theme of: Toy Story, Shrek, Finding Nemo and Frozen.

That’s about as much “screen time” as they will get in the next few weeks and I’m thankful for that. We are social creatures by nature. We all need device-free time and camp is the perfect place to disconnect and practice face-to-face communication. A camper’s time at Agawak allows them to grow in so many ways, but one way that’s increasingly important more than ever before is disconnecting electronically and engaging in social settings. When Agawak girls return home from the summer, they will rave about their experience but one thing you may not expect is how much more engaging they will be. Being without electronics for the summer produces campers who talk more, share more and engage more with everyone around them.  Of course, a summer on the shores of Blue Lake is always very memorable but what may be even more impactful is a campers increased social growth without all those electronic devices by their side 24 hours a day. So, thank you for not packing any electronics this summer.

Tonight we are playing an active game of water wars, which will have campers and staff running all over the property chasing one another. There are lots of activities at camp and many require campers to strategize, work together, out smart and out run members of the opposite team. During these games there is nothing more gratifying than a smile and a high-five from a camper who just did something they thought they never could.

Tomorrow morning it’s another full speed ahead activity day as we prepare for a weekend of special camp events.  Stay tuned for more camp fun to come!

Smile on,

Mary
