February Newsletter

The new Agawak brochure which was completed this past fall is now available on our web site.  For those of you who haven’t seen it especially alumni and returning campers you’ll want to take a quick glance at it. I tried to get as many campers in pictures as possible. Hope you find yourself in a picture or two.
Returning campers will be thrilled to know Jessica Filler and Dani Sutker are coming back to help lead the senior counselors. Their spirit and zest always adds something special to each and every camp day.  I look forward to seeing them at flagpole handing out our “yo last year have accepted their positions as JC1’s: Rebecca Aronson Alexa Boorstein Lauren Chilow Karaline Cohen Lily Cohen Nina Friend Jessica Granick Allison Grosky Lainie Kleifield Carly Lapins Ariel Swartz Logan Weiss and Madison Winner. They are eager to show campers a fun filled summer and help build friendships and memories along the way.
Our Australian camp fairs were a success. Former counselors Melinda Campell Erin Curties Claire Whittle and Kyla Ridley provided support and were a huge help with recruiting our quality international staff.  In the next month I will start posting the 2011 Agawak staff on the web site so watch for updates.  Our staff is finally compiled and we can’t wait for all the campers to liven this place up.  Although parents think we must put something in the water I know it’s the staff and the friendships that have a wonderful psychological effect on the campers.  I am so fortunate to have a staff that invests their love enthusiasm and spirit in such a way that it transcends to everyone in the camp family.
Johannas will be back for his third summer and will be working alongside Amy and Josh in the wilderness tripping program. He will be taking out overnight trips and completing his wilderness safety course before camp.  Did you hear that Johannas and Amy will be married in August? Yes we have yet another camp wedding on the horizon. Congratulations to the both of you.
For all my returning campers the reunion video is completed and it’s a keeper. I’ve watched it so many times already.  If anyone wants to purchase a copy they will be available for $10.  If anyone wants a 2010 reunion video mailed to them just email the camp office or give us a call.  Jaclyn and Jacob gave their approval with one or two minor suggestions so I feel confident with the final outcome.
Assistant director Stephanie Becker will have a surprise waiting for her when she drives into camp this spring. Brandon has been working diligently to put the finishing touches on a new staff cabin near the trampolines and Happy Camper Hall. After 4 summers of living in the office with 5 other people she and a few others deserve some time away from the office. If anyone has any suggestions for a name for the new cabin let me know. I have two possible names including: Pine Needle and Evergreen. Email the camp office your suggestions if you’re interested in helping name the cabin.
I recently purchased some new equipment for the riflery program and a few Trek bikes for the biking program.  We have been paging through catalogues searching for water polo equipment which I’m hoping will take off this summer under the leadership of Waterfront Director Ashley Kirby.
Last summer camper forms came in a bit quicker than previous years and I can’t begin to tell you how much this helps. Trying to gather and track down late or incomplete forms can be very overwhelming. Please do your part to make sure all your completed forms are in the camp office by May 1st. Call ahead of time to schedule a physical for your daughter(s) before the prep packets are sent out March 10th. Many parents assume if their daughter attends second session we do not need the forms until second session. This is not the case. All forms whether you attend first full or second session need to be returned by May 1st. Please make my job easier by promptly completing these forms accurately including all necessary doctor signatures and parent signatures.  No camper can be placed in a cabin until 100% of all the forms are in.
For those of you who are Agawak Alumni we will be hosting a reunion at camp in August during the summer of 2013. Mark your calendars.  Alumni must be at least 23 years of age to attend. More information will be posted as it becomes available. Currently we are updating our alumni data base. Please email us at fun@agawak.com with your name and address if you would like to receive mailings regarding the alumni reunion.
The winter is flying by at warp speed.  Hope all of you are counting down the days until we’re back together again.  Until next time may you dream of warm summer days on the shores of Blue Lake.
Smile On
