An Agawak up-date!

Every day at camp, campers are acquiring and honing skills all over the map from the athletic field to the waterfront, Tango Tower to arts and crafts, indoor cooking to archery. I see so many campers growing and learning and taking on new challenges. One of the most rewarding aspects of my job is when campers run up and tell me what they did for the first time at camp! That sparkle in their eye and the genuine enthusiasm in their voice simply can’t be beat.

Since I last wrote much has transpired at camp. Our PAs (campers going into 10th grade) took off for the Porcupine Mountain trip where they will camp, hike, bond as an age group and overlook Lake Superior. The Porkies are a group of small mountains that span the northwestern Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

On Wednesday, we squeezed in a full activity day. The sun was out but temperatures remained mild. Our junior and intermediate cabins enjoyed playing Clue last night as they ran around camp searching for clues to a mystery. Senior cabins "combed" the town of Minocqua looking for local scavenger hunt items. Ice cream treats for all at Island City Ice Cream ended the evening.

This morning rain came in and never left. We spent part of our day practicing for Blue and White lip-syncs. Later in the afternoon, spellers took the stage for our annual silent spelling bee. This game requires brains, teamwork and a high level of concentration. Agawak Spelling Bee brings two teams together in Happy Camper Hall and challenges them intellectually. When the last word of the game (Ojibwa) was read out loud and our social was officially announced, screams could be heard across the lake as older campers took to the door and ran for the showers. We gave them 45 minutes to dress and they arrived at dinner ready for an "indoor cookout" of hamburgers and veggie burgers. After ice cream was served we boarded the buses for Eagle River.

We have a lot in store the next week with the 4th of July right around the bend. Stay tuned as the very best is yet to come!

Smile on,

Mary
