Beautiful Day On Blue Lake

The excitement is so thick you can actually feel and smell it in the air as our PA’s (program assistants), campers going into 10th grade, prepare to leave for their annual Copper Falls trip this morning.  Ancient lava flows, deep gorges and beautiful waterfalls make Copper Falls one of our states most scenic parks. The entire age group will hike, camp under the stars, hang out, picnic and come back to camp much closer than when they left.

For breakfast our wonderful and experienced kitchen staff prepared homemade granola, yogurt and blueberry muffins along with tons of fresh fruit and cold cereal. Ducky and Abraham flipped over 350 grilled cheese sandwiches and stirred 100 lbs of fresh tomato basil soup.  For picky eaters we always have fresh fruit and a full salad bar with many toppings, including applesauce and peanut butter and jelly. Daily we stress the importance of eating healthy, drinking milk and making sure water bottles are filled with ice and plenty of water.

Campers have close to 50 activities that they can chose to take throughout the summer.  The first sign-up of the summer is heavy with campers learning the 4th of July parade dance. Over 150 campers will participate in this year’s parade down the main street of Minocqua dancing to the tune of “Better When I’m Dancing”.  Campers completing 5th through 10th grade are eligible to dance in the parade due to distance and length of the parade. Don’t worry! - Our junior campers will be performing the parade dance in front of all of us and will have their moment of glory here at camp. Regardless of their age all campers will get to enjoy a day in Minocqua on the 4th.

As I walked around camp this morning I saw campers either running or walking to their next fun activity. There wasn’t a homesick camper to be found.  On activity days campers are too preoccupied with activities to think about what they may be missing at home.  Brandon, head of maintenance, constructed a new game called carpet ball which he made out of wood and parked it next to the ga-ga ball pit.  Quickly campers gathered around to learn the rules and began playing. I think another camp favorite was introduced today.

Last night, we played a spirited game of Blue and White Stratego, a favorite among many campers. Girls hid all over camp hoping to remain hidden from the opposite team. Emma Herzog and Alexis Mauer (among others) were applauded by their teams after staying quiet and still in their hiding places for an extended period of time. Maddie Abrams did a great job of guarding the jail to make sure no one broke in and released all the girls that got caught earlier in the game. Everyone worked hard and teamwork was flowing left and right for both teams.

Monday’s camper of the day, Lola Geary (from LA) and today's camper of the day, Mari Engleby (from Colorado) were smiling from head to toe as the entire camp sang to them around the flagpole. Today in outdoor cooking campers were making cheese fondue and the indoor cooking class made homemade granola bars. The Tango Tower was filled with climbers of all ages and our lake is scattered with Agawak sailboats, skiers, paddle-boarders and canoes. The next several weeks are going to be filled with activities galore, amazing friends, unbelievable counselors, active evening programs and awesome days and nights on the shores of Blue Lake. Bring it on!
