Blue & White and Campfire

Last night we brought the Food Network to Agawak. For the first time in Agawak history we lead the Blue and White competition to a food challenge. Each team was divided into ten groups and given about 15 cupcakes. Once we distributed the cupcakes the leaders of each group (the PAs) were given took ten minutes to plan how they were going to decorate their cupcakes as a final display. The category was New York and each group was given a sub category they had to decorate. The ten themes were Broadway, 5th Avenue, Central Park, Bronx Zoo, New York Knicks, Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, Subway, Times Square, and Dylan’s Candy Bar. Each group was given 20 minutes to decorate and then they came together as a team and made a final display of New York City. The teams were given supplies such as: sprinkles in multiple colors, marshmallows, pretzel rods, colored ice cream cones, M&M’s, toothpicks, sticks etc. For the final display, they were able to use wooden structures that were built specifically for this event. This game truly gave our campers a chance to express their creativity! We were amazed at the effort and collaboration that created a mock New York City on each team. Stay tuned for the pictures of the creative cupcake structures.

Today we are in full activities. Lots of waterfront activities are going on. Our tennis program has been stronger than ever this summer. Our division one tennis instructors (Anita Racz and Kozue Matsumoto) have been outstanding. Our campers will go home better tennis players due to their efforts.   Abbey (cabin 1) and Jenna (cabin X) both caught the largest largemouth bass of the day… 15 inches.

This afternoon, when the CIT’s pulled into camp, we greeted them with open arms and loads of hugs.  They bent down and kissed the Agawak soil.  Here are a few words from CIT, Tori Winner about her Boundary Water experience: “The trip was unlike anything I have ever experienced before. Living with the bare minimum made me realize how fortunate we truly are here at camp. Not only did the trip make me realize my appreciation for camp, but it was also challenging physically and mentally because of the teamwork involved. Overall, I couldn’t ask for a more rewarding trip and feel a great sense of accomplishment as a Boundary Water survivor. “

Tonight we gather around the campfire to sing and reflect upon another the week gone by. A part of our campfire tradition is campfire girls. Each week the administrative staff comes together and discusses a girl in each division at camp that demonstrates positive energy, kindess and love for camp. This award is extremely special and is a true honor here. This week’s campfire girls are Amanda Berk, Rachel Frebert, Jamie Granick, Lainie Kleifield, and Kerry Watson.  Hat’s off to all of them for making Agawak a better place.

It’s time to head to the lodge for our weekly night meeting. Then it’s off to dreamland. Sleep well.

Smile on,

Mary
