Full Speed Ahead

Monday and Tuesday were perfect activity days with temperatures in the high 70’s. Our waterfront was buzzing with skiers, snorkelers, sailors and swimmers. Many campers have now passed out of their swim test, reached the top of the tango tower, thrown their first bowl on the pottery wheel, caught their first fish and have gotten up on skis for the very first time. Your daughter is making new friends, trying new things and becoming more independent and confident as a result of her camp experience. When she returns home there will be a little extra sparkle in her eyes.

Last night we had casino night. The theme was ice ice baby and campers dressed up in metallic blue and white. Lots of Agawak dollars were “scored” and a few dollars lost, as campers played various casino games inside happy camper hall. Counselors passed around hors d’oeuvres while campers bounced around trying to increase their profits. The stage was packed with happy campers dancing with Agawak dollars in their hands.

Today was Blue and White's Tenathlon.  The teams battled against each other in all divisions in various games all over camp.  Water relays, Gaga Ball, Dodgeball, Kickball, Kayak races are just a few of the competitions.  It was fun to see groups of campers, young and older, working together and the cheers I'm sure were heard across the lake.  We will all have to wait in suspense until the winner is announced tomorrow.

We are a few days away from the opening ceremonies of our Final Four competition which will take place Sunday morning. Campers were divided into four college teams and will be participating in various athletic games for their college. This year’s teams are Michigan State, Florida State Penn State and Arizona State.

On Friday, our second oldest age group will be going to our local high school for relay for life. This is an annual event for us and one our PAs look forward to each and every summer. As an age group they will sing the opening song together at relay for life and together they will walk, run and skip their way through a Marathon. For every lap they walk around the local high school track a colored bead will be placed around their neck. Each color represents a different kind of cancer that the girls will be walking to help raise money for and awareness. By the time the girls finish at 7 AM the next morning they will have completed a marathon and will have a beautiful colored necklace to take back to camp to remind them of this special event. No matter how many years the PAs have been coming to camp this night bonds them as an age group.

With only two weeks of camp left I am seeing the reality set in. Last Sunday’s campfire produced many tears as campers are well aware that there are only two more campfires left for the summer of 2019.  Some are creating their own Camp Agawak bucket lists and crossing off things they accomplish one by one. We will enjoy every moment together and pack in more fun than any other camp in the next two weeks. It’s been an unbelievable summer with much more fun to come.

Good night,

Mary
