Full Speed Ahead Until The Very End!

The treasure hunt VICTORY went to the Blue Team at 4:51am. White Team was on the last clue at the same time as Blue however it was the Blue Team that asked its chief if they could go to the waterfront first where the last clue was hidden.  It was an exhausting and exuberating treasure hunt. We are all still recovering from it.

This morning Taylor P. Cohen was selected as our camper of the day. Her sweetness, kindness and caring nature is the reason she was selected as camper of the day. Veteran counselor Alissa Warsh who has assumed additional responsibilities with our evening programs is well deserving of the counselor of the day award.

Today was a beautiful fun-filled activity day. Campers were skiing, climbing our spectacular and challenging Tango Tower, making banana chocolate chip muffins, cooking up garlic potatoes in outdoor cooking, sailing the waters of Blue Lake, catching small mouth bass, striking the targets at archery and walking and jogging Blue Lake road one last time. Sad but true..today was our final activity day of the summer.

Everyone here can sense camp is coming to a close. Hugs are lasting longer.  There’s lots of hand holding and tears. Campers burst out singing,”We don’t wanna go home boom, boom we’re having such a wonderful time” at every opportunity.  We want to soak up every single moment.  Campers and staff have already begun the countdown for next summer and the busses haven’t even rolled out of camp. I hear campers talking about next summer and that they don’t want to wait another 10 months to be back together at camp. It’s painful to say goodbye to lifelong friends who feel more like your sisters than your friends.

Tonight we will host our annual Agawak Awards Night under the spot lights in Happy Camper Hall. Several veteran staff members as well as campers will be receiving awards.  My head cook of 20 years (Chris Domack) known none other than Ducky will be honored as he celebrates a camp milestone. Emily Gurner and Brandon Komarak will be engraved on the 15 year plaque. My ten year girls Jacqueline Kaplan, Ryan Loeb, Sloane Oblonsky, Stacey Rhum, Meredith Rush, Julai Spathis, Chloe Weiss and Emily Wilensky will be given their silver Agawak logo charms to wear proudly.  They have spent a decade of summers at Agawak and their love and affection for Agawak runs deep.  The last two nights of camp are very emotional. As I type, I fight back the tears as I know the constant chatter and laughter outside my office window will soon be replaced by stillness and camp will be lifeless.  The bell will be no longer ring, the sound of small footsteps and slamming screen doors will be gone.  No one will ask a hundred times per day, “What’s for lunch?”  All of these silly things I will miss BUT most of all I will miss all the special people here who make Agawak a place I never want to leave.

Smile on full speed ahead!
