Director's Corner

It’s beginning to look a lot like summer camp, everywhere I go.  Camp boats are launching left and right into Blue Lake.  The swim and ski docks are in position. The trampolines are in the ground. Who’s ready to play trampball?  Our sprawling lodge roof is now sporting a fresh red roof and our new maple floor is ready for shoe prints covered in sand.  An eagle is circling the waterfront as I type and loons dot the surface of the water.  We are waiting patiently for everyone’s arrival and although we still have tons to accomplish before camp opens, June 24th won’t come soon enough.

We were right on schedule with the physical preparations of getting camp ready for the 2015 season until we got word that woodpeckers “went to town”, over the fall and winter, on the zip-line termination pole. What does this mean?, a brand new 55 foot, grade 2 pole, not easily found in the north woods of Wisconsin. If anyone has one in their backyard let me know.  No worries as the Aussies say. We’ll have everything in tip-top shape by the time the buses roll into camp.

I am concerned about one thing in particular that I would like to share with you.  Too many people are making requests to travel home during parent’s weekend.  As the old saying goes you give an inch and they take a mile. This issue has become an epidemic and will no longer be allowed.  Just like I had to eliminate packages, because some parents weren’t following the rules, it appears that we are headed in the same direction with regards to parents visiting day.  Please plan accordingly for next summer as I will NOT be allowing campers to go home over visiting weekend.

As you prepare your daughter for camp make sure you talk with her ahead of time about the separation. Let your daughter know that feelings of homesickness are very normal and most kids will have bouts of it that come and go.  Let your daughter know her counselors and the office staff will be here for her to guide her and get her thorough any uncomfortable feelings. All too often campers’ hold their feelings inside which is the worst thing they can do. Encourage your child to share any homesick feelings they have right away. Over the years, we have had numerous chronic homesick campers. We have seen and dealt with it all. I promise you we will get your child and YOU through this transition and a more confident and self-assured young lady will return home.

I welcome the pitter patter of footsteps running past my office window. The tug-a-war rope is ready and waiting. I don’t know about you but I’m gearing up for some of Ducky’s scrumptious lazy breakfast pancakes. The day we’ve all been waiting for is fast approaching so get plenty of rest and get ready for plenty of fun.

Smile on. Full speed ahead!

Mary
