Parent's Weekend

by:

Another parent’s day has come and gone. It’s like a whirlwind. All of us here love to show off our beautiful camp.  The tsunami of joy was running deep here. The rain held off and sprinkled us a bit just as we were finishing up with our delicious cookout. We have a few too many leftovers but the staff with devour them tomorrow. Thank you to all the parents for traveling north. Many of you come from a far distance such as CA, FL, AZ, OH, GA, NC and even Mexico. It was a beautiful day and I truly enjoyed visiting with as many of you as I could.

The hardest part of my job is saying goodbye to campers. Everyone comes and then everyone eventually leaves which is hard. The bonds we form grow deep. It hurts to say goodbye to people you care about. Every camper and staff here leaves some sort of footprint on me. They mold me in ways they aren’t aware of. The best part of my job is witnessing the growth in individual campers. I see young campers work through their bouts of homesickness and leave more independent and self-confident. I see campers accomplishing things they would never get the chance to unless they came to camp.  I get to see them being children in a society that makes them grow up too quickly. I have the best job in the world! I don’t want you to think it’s always sunny behind the curtain. I do have days when I laugh to keep from crying but I wouldn’t trade one day here for a day someplace else.

Camp is calm and quiet as we prepare for our second session friends to join us tomorrow. Counselors are busy making job charts and will have some well deserved time off this evening to rest and replenish themselves. Emily Gurner and staff will be at Deerfield High School tomorrow by 8:00am to help board the buses. Buses will depart at 8:30am. The gates of Camp Agawak will reopen tomorrow at 11am to welcome back returning campers and campers being dropped off.

We are ready to go full speed ahead with all of you tomorrow. Make your day count.
Smile on,
Mary
