Farewell to the Rookies

The weather this past week has been GREAT— and continues to be — magnificent. We haven’t had an ounce of rain since last Sunday — it’s been sunny and beautiful for all daytime activities and very comfortable at night.  We’ve been hydrating all day and at meals and getting our morning snack between activities. It's so wonderful and fulfilling to see cabin groups becoming closer with each passing day. Sure, there are going to be campers the first week who have some very normal butterflies and experience bouts of homesickness but before each camper closes their eyes at night – they know their new summer family is fully ready to watch over them for the next few weeks.

Our first teepee trip set sail last night for some outdoor adventure. They collected kindling, learned about the natural world, made several s'mores, and shared stories around the campfire. When Alum, like Margie Gordon, lead our teepee overnights, I know all is well.

Today is another full day of activities for us and whether we're in full activities, our cabins, at the teepee, or enjoying a fun evening program...... life is great in 54548!

It’s hard to believe that we’ve almost been at camp for a full week. Camp has been going FULL SPEED AHEAD with a schedule jam packed to keep girls up and about and excited. We just completed our third and final day of our first activities series and boy were they fun.

In the lodge during dinner, we had so many campers standing on their chairs for “Standing O’s” where the camp sang “BRAVO, BRAVO, BRAVO, BRAVISIMO…” to recognize their big accomplishments. Some campers climbed the Tango Tower for the first time, others got up on waterskis, some shot their first bullseye, and some even caught their first fish but what was common among all of them were the smiles they had on their faces.

Last night, we played a favorite Blue & White Game: Stratego, which is basically a big game of hide and go seek. Campers were running all around camp searching for the opposing teams’ flags and cheering on their teammates.

Tonight, we have been cordially invited to Mary & Bill’s Wedding. The wedding ceremony will take place at Campfire with a reception to follow in the lodge. Campers will dance, play games and eat food to celebrate.

Our PA’s leave for their Porcupine Mountain camping trip tomorrow morning. They are super excited to hike, swim and be outdoors. Camp will miss their positivity and energy but we will see them again in just 3 short days.

Lastly, we said goodbye to our rookies this morning. Before we sent them on their way, we had an award ceremony which included Future Blue/White Team Captain, Ducky’s Biggest Fan, Future Inspector and Sleeping Beauty. They all left loving camp as much as we do and we stand by the fact that there really is something special about Agawak that takes hold of you and never, ever lets go.

The bell is ringing and it’s time for us to be flower girls, so we gotta go!

Until next time,

Sam and Sloan (Rookie Counselors ’18)
