Opening Day at Agawak

There was a certain kind of magic in the air today—the kind that only comes once a year, on the very first day of camp. Today marked the start of a brand-new chapter for every camper who stepped off that bus, backpack in hand.

Whether it’s your daughter’s very first summer at Agawak or her fifth, the excitement of Opening Day never fades. The hugs between old friends, the wide eyes of first-timers, the counselors cheering at the top of their lungs—it all blends into one unforgettable day that reminds us why we do what we do.

Today, we begin cabin chants, canoe races and campfires. We begin whispered bedtime stories and the thrill of trying something new. We begin another summer of laughter, growth, and a thousand memories waiting to unfold.

For our campers, today is a leap into something joyful, empowering, and real. For our staff, it’s the day we’ve all been waiting for—to pour our hearts into creating a summer your daughters will never forget.

In true Agawak fashion our misfortune of crummy pre-camp weather gave way to sunny skies as the buses rolled into camp. Counselors sang and cheered as loads of happy campers stepped off the bus eager to find out their cabin placement for the summer.

It was all smiles and “full speed ahead’ as we jumped into swim tests and tubing! Hearing the camp bell ring for the first dinner brought a smile to my face—spaghetti and meatballs, anyone? Our first dinner together as a camp family was filled with lots of silly cheers. Oh how, I miss those silly songs all year long.

Our staff show was a big hit as we packed into Happy Camper Hall to to meet and learn about the staff and activity offerings for summer 2025. A big thank you to our Evening Program Directors (Maya, Noa, and Cara) for a job well done.

The first night always brings some reflection for me as well as a reminder of how appreciative and lucky we all are to be back together in a place we call our second home. There’s so much to look forward to and I’m excited for what summer 2025 has in store for all of us.

I am excited for our new campers and staff to start their Agawak journey and create meaningful relationships.

I am excited for our returners to rekindle and build upon old friendships while building new ones.

I am excited for all the growth that will transpire over the next eight weeks…..individually and as a camp community.

Most importantly I’m excited for all the unforgettable memories and fun we’re going to enjoy together each and every day.

I’m thankful for our warm weather today as well as the health and safety of our campers who traveled near and far to get here. I am extremely proud and appreciative of our tremendous staff.

Our campers are now nestled in their bunks safe and sound. It’s time for me get to my bunk as well.

So here’s to the start of Summer 2025. The trunks are unpacked, the cabins are full, and the magic has officially begun.

Smile on,

Mary
