Our day began watching the CITs skip down the black path to board the bus for their Boundary Waters adventure. They ran through a tunnel of cheers and good wishes sporting braids of all kinds. For the rest of camp, it was on to a hobo hash breakfast, cabin inspection and a full activity day of water sports, land sports, ceramics, indoor cooking and arts and crafts. While the weather teased us a bit, the rain never came making it a glorious warm day in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. It is truly amazing to walk from one end of camp to another and see the variety of fun activities taking place. While the girls on the Happy Camper deck acted out a scene from their favorite cartoon, other girls were feeling the burn of their muscles in Pilates and still others were swimming, fishing, and skiing on Blue Lake.
Our new campers are settling in to their cabins and forging new relationships. One of the best things about camp, of course, are the special friendships that form here. I have heard from so many of my alumnae that camp friends are the best friends. You can always be yourself at camp in a way that some girls feel they can not at home. I am so proud to be able to provide the kind of place where girls can develop confidence in their relationships and in themselves. By embracing and insisting on kindness and inclusivity, our girls learn to work through differences and find common threads which help to forge those unbreakable bonds.
Few Agawak nights are complete without a silly costume to make the event more festive! Tonight’s game, Gold Rush, had cabins working together to find a hidden treasure. Cabin mates had to communicate, be patient and problem solve to answer several clues which lead to a wooden treasure box. Campers guarded against aliens and cowboys while collecting as many Agawak dollars as they could for their cabin. Agawak dollars are used at the end of every session to buy something special for their cabin to enjoy such as a movie in Happy Camper Hall, a trip to Briq’s for ice cream, a lazy breakfast sleep-in with homemade pancakes and more.
From activity days to Gold Rush, from late-night giggles in the cabins to shared triumphs and even the occasional setback, every moment at Agawak contributes to a treasure trove of memories that become etched in our hearts.
