Another incredible week has flown by at Camp Agawak, and with each passing day, we find ourselves getting more excited for one of the biggest celebrations of the summer—the Fourth of July! Campers entering 5th through 10th grades will be dancing their way through the streets of Minocqua to the beat of Blame It on the Boogie, bringing smiles to the faces of locals watching. It’s one of those unforgettable camp traditions that campers look forward to year after year. It’s hard to believe it’s less than a week away.
This week was packed with laughter, adventure, and waterfront fun that our campers can never get enough of. One of the week’s highlights was Messy Mania—our version of the Food Olympics! Campers dove headfirst into outrageous challenges involving chocolate syrup, whipped cream, sprinkles, marshmallows, and just about every sticky ingredient imaginable. By the end, many girls looked more like giant chocolate sundaes than campers. Some were so completely covered in whipped cream and sprinkles that they were nearly unrecognizable! The smiles, laughter, and squeals of delight said it all.
Cabin Color War also brought another level of excitement as cabins competed on the upper athletic field in a series of spirited challenges. The cheering was loud, the competition was friendly, and every camper walked away covered from head to toe.
Mother Nature overall has been kind to us this summer, allowing our activity schedule to run full speed ahead. We did experience one memorable surprise during Thursday’s lunch when a heavy rainstorm—with hail—rolled through. Thankfully, our campers were safely inside the lodge enjoying lunch and had no idea what was happening outside. Rather than waiting for the storm to pass, our staff turned the dining hall into an impromptu dance party! For thirty minutes, campers sang at the top of their lungs, danced with friends, and finished with one giant conga line weaving through the lodge. By the time the music ended, the rain had stopped, the sun was shining once again, and the lodge doors swung open as campers happily headed back to their cabins for rest hour before gathering for Blue and White Lip Sync practice.
This past week also marked another exciting milestone as campers selected their second round of activities, which begins Monday. New adventures await as girls continue exploring interests, navigating cabin life, and stepping outside their comfort zones. We also enjoyed spending time with our friends at the Camp Horseshoe Social, a wonderful tradition that reminds us of the strong overnight camp community here in the Northwoods.
Our sights are set on Olympic Day, a special anticipated event that takes place first session. Perhaps the most rewarding part of this point in the summer is seeing just how much our campers have grown. The girls who arrived a week or two ago feeling nervous or a little homesick have truly settled into camp life. In fact, many of those same campers can now be heard singing one of our favorite Agawak songs: “We Don’t Wanna Go Home.” It is one of the sweetest reminders of how quickly camp begins to feel like home.
That transformation is what makes overnight camp so special. Campers arrive as strangers, unsure of what lies ahead, and before long they leave as lifelong friends. They learn resilience, independence, kindness, leadership, confidence, and the joy that comes from supporting one another. So much personal growth happens in such a short amount of time.
There is a reason so many of us say that we live two months for the other ten. Camp Agawak isn’t simply a place to spend the summer—it becomes a second home. We can’t wait to see what the next week brings.
Smile on,
Mary
