One of the things that makes Camp Agawak so special is that no two days are ever exactly alike. From the moment campers wake up until their heads hit the pillow. Each day is filled with opportunities to learn, grow, laugh, and create memories that will carry them into adulthood.
Our activity days are packed with adventure and excitement. Throughout the week, campers can be found waterskiing across Blue Lake, casting a fishing line from a boat, sailing with friends, biking the trails around camp, practicing gymnastics skills, playing volleyball, jogging on Streeter Road, creating their own unique pottery pieces, cooking delicious treats in indoor cooking, learning fun dance routines, or challenging themselves on the climbing wall.
One of the greatest gifts of camp is the opportunity for girls to try something new. Whether it’s standing up on water skis for the first time, climbing a little higher than they thought possible, or performing in front of their peers. Every new experience builds confidence. Camp encourages girls to step outside their comfort zones and discover strengths they never knew they had.
While activities are a big part of camp life, the friendships being formed are what camp is all about. Every day we see campers sitting together at meals, walking arm-in-arm between activities, cheering each other on at the waterfront, sharing stories before bedtime or sitting on swings chatting up a storm. Friendships that begin as introductions on the first day quickly grow into meaningful bonds that last well after the gates close for the summer.
And when the sun begins to set each day, the fun continues with our evening programs. Campers look forward to favorites like the Counselor Pageant, Cabin Cake Wars, the always-popular Nancy Drew mystery game, and so many other traditions that fill camp with laughter and excitement.
Of course, one of Agawak’s most cherished traditions is our Sunday evening campfire. Gathering around a campfire at the end of a busy week has a certain magic. As the flames flicker and the sun sets over Blue Lake, campers and counselors sit shoulder-to-shoulder singing Agawak songs that have been sung by generations of campers before them. In those moments, girls feel connected not only to one another, but to the 105-year sisterhood that makes Agawak so unique.
Campfire Girls speeches are another special part of the evening. These speeches recognize campers who have demonstrated growth, leadership, kindness, and commitment to the camp community. Listening to these heartfelt reflections reminds all of us that camp is about so much more than activities—it is about becoming a better friend, trying your best, overcoming challenges, and growing into the person you are meant to be.
As another week unfolds on Blue Lake, we are grateful for the laughter, friendships, adventures, and memories being created. Camp is a place where girls discover new passions, build lifelong friendships, and gain the confidence to take on whatever challenges await them.
And perhaps that’s the greatest gift of all.
Smile on,
Mary
